Interesting perspective. I can agree with a lot of your thoughts there.

some of them are counter intuitve, but can work. you think they work for you. and they make you happy.

It is really undervalued knowing what makes you happy.

Thanks for the reply, good food for thought. I can definitely use coffee and lunch money!
I think I'm going to give it a shot, like you said if it doesn't make much money, no big deal, I enjoy doing it anyway. I only plan on submittimg simple graphic ornaments for this type of thing, wouldn't want to pimp out any full blown illustration on speculation that it will make money. Who knows, we are all new to these new business models...

I think stock is good. It's supplies me a good stream of coffee and lunch money. Once you make it, you set it and forget it. Easy Peezy.

Is it bad for the illustration/design industry? I have no idea.

Is it bad for you, the illustrator/designer? Absolutely not.

Just because it won't make you lots of money doesn't mean the act of creating art assets is not worthwhile. You'll have a library of stock art to utilize forever, and generally you get better at creating art when you make art, so every stock art you make, the better you should be.

Hey Jimi -
I recently discovered your blog, and it is loaded with great stuff. I'm curious how you feel about selling stock vectors for residual income. I think you have a good model with the Golden Black. I was considering selling simple vector elements on istock and the like, but the income earned is very small unless you have massive amounts of downloads/sales. Do you think these stock sites are a good way to make some extra cash, or are they bad for the illustration/design industry?

Thanks!

Good inspirational read, thank you. I do think that for some of us it is the fear of success that can be daunting. "Wow, I just had a great success, now how will I top that?" or "I don't know if I can keep up the pace" and we can stay in a comfortable but not profitable mediocrity. I am encouraged to keep doing what I am doing, but do it more often and with greater conviction. Thank you again.
